NewsSriLankaPurchasingManers’Index(ManufacturingandServices)-March2024PurchasingManers’IndicesindicateexpansionsinManufacturingandServices activitiesinMarch2024.SriLankaPurchasingManers’IndexforManufacturing (PMI–Manufacturing)recordedanindexvalueof62.5in March2024,indicatinganexpansioninmanufacturing activities.ThismarksthehighestPMI-Manufacturingthatwas recordedinthreeyears.Allthesub-indicesexpandedona month-on-monthbasiscontributingtothisincrease,mainlydrivenby theseasonaldemand.TheincreaseinNewOrdersandProductionwasmainlyattributable tothemanufactureoffood&beveresandtextiles&apparel sectors.Mostofthemanufacturers,especiallyinfood&bevere sector,wereoptimisticabouttheupcomingfestiveseason.Moreover, EmploymentandStockofPurchasesincreasedduringthemonthin linewiththeNewOrdersandProduction.Further,adeclineinprice levelswasalsoevident.Meanwhile,Suppliers'DeliveryTime remainedlengthened,yetataslowerrateinMarch.ReadmoreaboutSriLankaPurchasingManers’Index(ManufacturingandServices)-March2024CentralBankIssuesGuidelinesfortheEstablishmentofBusinessRevivalUnitsinLicensedBankstoSupportRevivalofViableBusinessesTheCentralBankofSriLankaissuedbroadguidelinestolicensedbankson28March2024,tofurtherstrengthenthefunctionsofalreadyestablishedPostCOVID-19RevivalUnitsandreformulatesuchunitsasBusinessRevivalUnits(BRUs).TheenhancedscopeofproposedBRUswillfacilitatesustainablerevivalofviablebusinessesaffectedbytheextraordinarymacroeconomicconditionsandensuretheproperhandlingoftheincreasedimpairedassetsoflicensedbanks.TheCentralBanksoughtrelevantstakeholderviewsincludingthebankingindustryandtheChamberofCommerce,whenformulatingtheseguidelines.Thechallengingmacroeconomicconditionsprevailedduringtherecentyearsheledtodisruptingtheincomegeneratingactivitiesofbusinesses,adverselyimpactingtheabilityofborrowerstodulyrepaytheirloansandtherebyimpairingtherecoveryprocessoflicensedbanks.Thus,thesettingupofBRUsisconsideredimperativetoassistbothperformingandnon-performingborrowersoflicensedbankswhosebusinessesarefundamentallyviabletorevive.ReadmoreaboutCentralBankIssuesGuidelinesfortheEstablishmentofBusinessRevivalUnitsinLicensedBankstoSupportRevivalofViableBusinessesCCPIbasedheadlineinflationdeceleratedsharplyinMarch2024Headlineinflation,asmeasuredbytheyear-on-year(Y-o-Y)changeintheColomboConsumerPriceIndex(CCPI,2021=100)deceleratedsharplyto0.9%inMarch2024from5.9%inFebruary2024.ThisdecelerationintheheadlineinflationisbroadlyinlinewiththeprojectionsoftheCentralBankofSriLanka(CBSL).Non-FoodCategoryrecordedadeflation(Y-o-Y)of0.5%inMarch2024comparedtotheinflationof7.0%observedinFebruary2024.Nevertheless,foodinflation(Y-o-Y)acceleratedto3.8%inMarch2024from3.5%inFebruary2024.MonthlychangeofCCPIrecorded-1.94%inMarch2024duetothepricedecreasesof0.66%observedintheitemsofFoodcategoryanddecreasesof1.28%observedinNon-Foodcategoryitems.Meanwhile,coreinflation(Y-o-Y),whichreflectstheunderlyinginflationtrendsintheeconomy,acceleratedto3.1%inMarch2024from2.8%inFebruary2024.ReadmoreaboutCCPIbasedheadlineinflationdeceleratedsharplyinMarch2024SLPurchasingManers’Index(PMI)forConstructionIndustry–February2024SriLankaPurchasingManers’IndexforConstruction (PMI–Construction)indicatesanexpansioninconstructionactivitiesinFebruary2024,asreflectedbytheTotalActivityIndex,whichrecordedanindexvalueof57.1.Manyfirmsattributedthegrowthinconstructionactivitiestothecurrentconduciveenvironmentandtheresumptionofseveraltemporarilysuspendedprojects. ReadmoreaboutSLPurchasingManers’Index(PMI)forConstructionIndustry–February2024ExternalSectorPerformance-February2024BothimportexpenditureandexportearningsincreasedinFebruary2024,comparedtoayearo.However,astheincreaseinimportssurpassedthatofexports,thetradedeficitwidened.Also,importexpenditureinFebruarydeclinednotablycomparedtopreviousmonth,ledbylowerfuelimports. Servicessectorrecordednotablenetinflowsintermsofearningsfromtourism,seatransport,airtransport,andcomputerandIT/BPOrelatedservices. Workers’remittancescontinuedtorecordimprovementsonyear-on-yearbasisinFebruary2024aswell.InFebruary2024,foreigninvestmenttotheColomboStockExchange(CSE)recordedthehighestmonthlynetinflowsinceFebruary2022,whiletherewasanetoutflowfromthegovernmentsecuritiesmarket.GrossOfficialReservesstoodatUSdollars4.5billionbyendFebruary2024andtheSriLankarupeeappreciatedby7.6percentainsttheUSdollarduringtheyearupto28March2024.ReadmoreaboutExternalSectorPerformance-February2024TheCentralBankofSriLankaFurtherReducesPolicyInterestRatesTheMonetaryPolicyBoardoftheCentralBankofSriLanka,atitsmeetingheldon25March2024,decidedtoreducetheStandingDepositFacilityRate(SDFR)andtheStandingLendingFacilityRate(SLFR)oftheCentralBankby50basispoints(bps)to8.50percentand9.50percent,respectively.TheBoardarrivedatthisdecisionfollowingacomprehensiveassessmentofcurrentandexpecteddomesticandinternationaleconomicdevelopments,tomaintaininflationatthetargetedlevelof5percentoverthemediumterm,whileenablingtheeconomytoreachitspotential.Inarrivingatthisdecision,theBoardtooknoteof,amongothers,subduedgregatedem
